Spinach plants were grown in hydroponic culture provided with variable limiting amounts of N. During a complete diurnal cycle, growth of the root and shoot parts, as well as levels of soluble and insoluble sugars and of free amino acids, were monitored. No clear relationship could be detected between the level of N feeding and the levels of free sugars and amino acids. Analysis of variance revealed that the variances in the relative growth rates of plant root and shoot could be correlated with the levels of sugars and amino acids. Root amino acid concentration could be correlated with shoot amino acid concentration and root sugar concentration. No relationship was found between the variances in root and shoot free sugar concentrations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT In the natural resource and wildlife profession, we face difficulties in the production, diffusion, and transfer of rigorously tested science, especially when facing entrenched management paradigms. We present 3 case studies to illustrate the challenges in changing entrenched management paradigms for endangered species. Here we examine specifically what factors helped or hindered the adoption of management practices through the theoretical framework developed for the dissemination of technologies. An examination of 3 case studies suggests that active communication and advocacy of scientific findings, along with simple, visible results, will aid researchers in the acceptance and adoption of their research. Management agencies that increase openness and communication with outside experts, reduce bureaucratic procedures, and localize decision making increase the likelihood that new scientific ideas will be adopted by the agency. We also suggest adaptive resource management as a strategy for endangered species management may foster many of the characteristics that aid in the adoption of scientific ideas into management activities.  相似文献

Abstract: The endangered Florida Key deer (Odocoileus virginianus clavium) is endemic to the Lower Florida Keys. In recent years, habitat fragmentation and restricted dispersal have resulted in small, isolated herds on some islands. Recovery biologists proposed translocations to increase the island herds that had declined or remained low; however, efficacy of Key deer translocations had yet to be evaluated. Our objective was to evaluate survival, ranges, reproduction, and dispersal of translocated deer. During 2003–2005, we translocated 39 adult or yearling deer to Sugarloaf (approx. 19 km from trap site; 10 M, 14 F) and Cudjoe (approx. 15 km from trap site; 6 M, 9 F) keys. We kept deer in large, high-fenced holding pens (Sugarloaf = 7.7 ha, Cudjoe = 10.7 ha) on the destination islands for 3–6 months (i.e., soft release). We observed low mortality (n = 6 mortalities) of translocated deer with average annual survival (S) of 0.796 for both sexes. We found translocated deer had larger seasonal ranges than did resident deer (i.e., those located on Big Pine and No Name keys). In evaluating effects of acclimation period on ranges and dispersal, we found no difference in 95% ranges or 50% core areas ≤4 month postrelease versus 4–8 months postrelease. We found, however, postrelease dispersal distances were dependent on time kept in pen. Only 2 of 39 (5%) translocated deer left the destination islands by the end of the study. With high survival and low dispersal indicating success, we credit soft release translocation in establishing deer herds on Sugarloaf and Cudjoe keys. Our data support translocations as an effective strategy for creating sustainable outer-island Key deer herds.  相似文献

Abstract A number of studies on mammalian species that have adapted to urban areas suggest survival may be higher for urban populations than rural populations. We examined differences in fatalities between an urban and rural population of fox squirrels (Sciurus niger). We radiocollared (n = 50 rural, n = 78 urban) fox squirrels during approximately 2 years. We found monthly survival of rural fox squirrels (Ŝ = 0.936) was lower than urban fox squirrels (Ŝ = 0.976) over the same 12-month period. Nonetheless, when comparing a 24-month period of survival data on urban squirrels with an 18-month period on the rural squirrels (periods overlapped for 12 months), survival rates were more similar between urban (Ŝ = 0.938) and rural squirrels (Ŝ = 0.945). Our data suggest that sex and season may influence survival of urban squirrels and not rural squirrels. We also found that cause of fatalities differed between the urban and rural squirrels, with >60% of fatalities on the rural site caused by predation. In contrast, <5% of the fatalities on the urban site were caused by predation and >60% of urban fox squirrel fatalities were caused by motor vehicle collisions. This study illustrates the need to advance our ability to understand, predict, and mitigate effects of urbanization on wildlife resources.  相似文献

Spinach plants (Spinacia oleracea L.) were grown hydroponically in fixed environmental conditions either at full nitrate availability (11·8mol m-3) or at a suboptimum relative nitrate addition rate of 0·20d-1, 0·15d-1 or 0·10d-1 respectively, the other nutrients being adequately provided. The relative growth rate (RGR) of the plants varied significantly with the nutrition treatment and decreased during development in all treatments. The concentration of reduced nitrogen in the plants grown at full nitrate availability did not change significantly during the experimental growth period and nitrate accumulation was substantial. After an adaptation period, the concentration of reduced nitrogen in the plants at the suboptimum nitrate addition rates increased during growth and was lowest at the lowest relative nitrate addition rate. Nitrate uptake was almost complete in the suboptimum treatments and nitrate accumulation was negligible as long as the concentration of reduced nitrogen was below 2·0 mmol (g dry weight)-1. The RGR of all plants was proportional to the concentration of reduced nitrogen in the plant minus a minimal tissue concentration required for growth. However, the proportionality factor was inversely related to the plant mass. This relationship was summarized in an empirical model which explained 98·7% of the variance of the dry weight (log scale) data of all treatments at all harvests. The model was compared with other growth models found in the literature. The shoot/root weight ratio increased from 2 to 4 if nitrate provision was not limiting, and initially, this ratio decreased at suboptimum nitrate provision but increased at higher growth stages. Possible explanations of the dynamics of dry matter partitioning are discussed in relation to models.  相似文献

A modification of the phenol-sulphuric acid method to determinethe bulk of soluble or insoluble sugars in plant tissue is proposed.The method is based on optimizing the phenol concentration toobtain equal colour yields for glucose, fructose and sucrose.The optimal phenol concentration is found to depend on the ethanolconcentration of the measuring solution. 1. Two field experiments were carried out to examine the role of patch size, host density, and complexity of the surrounding habitat, on the foraging behaviour of the parasitoid wasp Cotesia glomerata in the field. 2. First, released parasitoids were recaptured on patches of one or four Brassica nigra plants, each containing 10 hosts that were placed in a mown grassland area. Recaptures of females were higher than males, and males and females aggregated at patches with four plants. 3. In experiment 2, plants containing 0, 5 or 10 hosts were placed in unmown grassland plots that differed in plant species composition, on bare soil, and on mown grassland. Very low numbers of parasitoids were recaptured in the vegetated plots, while high numbers of parasitoids were recaptured on plants placed on bare soil or in mown grassland. Recaptures were higher on plants on bare soil than on mown grassland, and highest on plants containing 10 hosts. The host density effect was significantly more apparent in mown grassland than on bare soil. 4. Cotesia glomerata responds in an aggregative way to host density in the field. However, host location success is determined mostly by habitat characteristics, and stronger host or host‐plant cues are required when habitat complexity increases.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We used nucleotide sequence data from a mitochondrial DNA fragment to characterize variation within the endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbit (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri). We observed 5 unique mitochondrial haplotypes across different sampling sites in the Lower Florida Keys, USA. Based on the frequency of these haplotypes at different geographic locations and relationships among haplotypes, we observed 2 distinct clades or groups of sampling sites (western and eastern clades). These 2 groups showed low levels of gene flow. Regardless of their origin, marsh rabbits from the Lower Florida Keys can be separated into 2 genetically distinct management units, which should be considered prior to implementation of translocations as a means of offsetting recent population declines.  相似文献

Abstract: Free -roaming cats (e.g., owned, semi-feral, and feral) impact wildlife worldwide through predation, competition, and disease transmission. Baseline ecological information necessary for population management is lacking. We radiocollared free-roaming cats (feral, n = 30; semi-feral, n = 14; owned, n = 10) in Caldwell, Texas, USA between October 2004 and November 2005 and compared population demographics among sex and ownership classification. We found ranges and movements declined across ownership classes whereas survival and fecundity increased. Our findings suggest that human interactions (e.g., feeding) may result in high, localized free-roaming cat densities, which may concentrate feral cat impacts and should be considered when evaluating population control strategies.  相似文献
